October 9, 2012 - Wildcats Win Again; Top Edinboro In Straight Sets

AMHERST, NY - The Daemen College volleyball team ran its' season-long winning streak to 10 today, sweeping the visiting Edinboro Fighting Scots of NCAA Division II and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in straight sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-12).

Daemen, now 14-5 on the season, is 9-0 vs. NCAA Division II opponents during their current streak. Edinboro, meanwhile, winners of two straight coming into tonight, falls to 7-14.

The Fighting Scots looked like they were up for the challenge as they busted out to a 12-6 lead in set one. After a quick timeout, the Wildcats responded, taking nine of the next 12 points to even things at 15-15. Junior right side hitter Jenn Karan (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park HS) keyed the run with three kills for the Wildcats.

The Wildcat run continued as Daemen opened up a 20-16 lead after a service ace from senior outside hitter Joanna Fretthold (N. Tonawanda, NY/N.Tonawanda HS). Edinboro would battle back, cutting the Daemen lead to three at 21-18. Back-to-back kills by Daemen's Katie Auge (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca HS) stopped the Edinboro momentum and Fretthold finished off the set with a kill.

From there, Daemen was really never seriously challenged. The Wildcats opened up a 12-5 lead in set number two. Later, with Daemen leading 20-12, the Fighting Scots did mount a small comeback, getting within six at 22-16. A Fretthold kill and two more from Karan shut the door, however.

Daemen dominated set number three, coming up with 12 kills in 21 attempts while committing just two hitting errors in the set (.476 attack percentage).

The Daemen defense did the job as the team came up with 46 digs in the match while holding Edinboro to a hitting percentage of just .035. The Fighting Scots committed 22 hitting errors in the match, and to compound matters, added 13 service errors.

Fretthold (15 digs), Auge (14 digs) and junior Paige Tilert (Derby, NY/Genesee CC) paced the Daemen defense.

Karan led the way for Daemen, offensively, with 10 kills. Fretthold added nine and sophomore middle blocker Ye Wang (Beijing, China/Hachioji Jissen HS) has six. The trio combined for a hitting percentage of .315 with just eight errors between them in 54 attempts. Wang added four blocks in the middle for Daemen.

Junior Kaley Vazquez (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West HS) totaled 17 assists while sophomore Chelsea Turcer (Alexander, NY/Alexander Central HS) added 12.

Next up for the Wildcats is a tri-match this Saturday at Buffalo Satte. The Wildcats will face the host Bengals, whom they beat here last week, at 10am before finishing against St. John Fisher at noon.
